ZXClub.netMy Strosek 300zx project, longest project ever!?! Post Posted: May 7th, '12, 16:49

I have owned 2 300zx's and bought the first one pictured here in 1999.

I made some modifications to it over a period of years and had always wanted to do a wide arch 300.

In February 2008 a genuine Strosek 300zx wide arch came up for sale with a water leak and i thought that it would be better to restore this one and use the parts from my first one to help get the build going.

The engine was losing a lot of water but ran pretty well considering! I set about stripping down the 2 zeds and ended up with 2 bare shells and a lot of parts! Off to be resprayed,

It was then that i made the mistake of entrusting Z Tech with helping me with the build. I bought the following parts and everything was taken down to them...... :censored:

Richmond Leader Gears Fitted in TT Diff
Inland Empire1 Piece Propshaft
Nismo Gearbox Mount
Nismo Pilot Bushing
CZP Chromoly Clutch Pivot Ball
CZP Solid Bronze Shifter Bushings
Z1 Short shifter
Custom Stainless Steel Exhaust System
Labree Stainless Divorced Wastegate Downpipes
GT675RS Turbos
Mike Smith Manifolds
New Engine wiring Loom
300 Degree Fuel Rail
Nismo 740 cc Injectors
Series 2 PTU
CZP Hard Pipe Kit
Koyo Radiator
JWT Pop Chargers x 2
Doolz Intake
Racelogic Traction Control
AEM Air Intake Temperature Sensor
AEM 3.5 Bar MAP Sensor
AEM Dual Channel UEGO Kit
Z1 Larger Throttle Bodies
HKS Side Mount Intercoolers
Unorthodox Racing Pulley Set
Blitz SBC-ID Boost Controller
Splitfire Coilpacks
Carbon Fibre Throttle Cover
Carbon Fibre Fan Shroud Cover
Carbon Fibre Timing Belt Cover
Carbon Fibre Radiator Air Guide
Carbon Fibre Headlight Panels
Stainless Steel Fuse Box Covers
CZP Stainless Steel Braided Clutch Line
Stainless Steel Koyo Radiator Bracket
Stainless Steel Lower Radiator pipe
Polished Plenum
Chromed PAS Pot
Chromed Radiator Water Pipes
Chromed R/H Accessory Bracket
Chromed Cruise Control Bracket
Chromed Balance Tube
Chromed Crank Angle Bracket
Chromed Idle Air Control Tube
Stainless Steel Bolt Set
Repalcement IAA Valve Feed Pipe
Brake Booster Silicone Hoses
Full Silicone Vacuum Hose Line Set

Needless to say that the Z sat without any work being carried out, yet money having changed hands, for a long long time. Then one day i received a phone call that went along the lines of "you need to come and pick up your car as we are closing!" I had got to a really low point and after making a few panic phone calls to a transport company to pick up the shell and then setting off to drive down from Glasgow to ensure i got all my parts i was for jacking the project in. Thankfully i knew Phil from Blackmoor in Manchester and when i called and explained the situation he was brilliant. All the parts and the shell was delivered to him and he set about building it up.

I had originally planned on using the engine and manual gearbox from my first Z but an engine came up which was too good to miss. It was fully forged and had a brand new set of GT675RS tubs waiting to go on along with an AEM engine management system and RPS Carbon Carbon clutch. Shortly after i managed to pick an OS Giken gearbox which has taller 1-3 gears.

Couple of nice lookin Z's there. Can never really get my head into the Strosek bumpers, but I do like their wide-arch kit.

I love the strosek cars, the only thing that deters me is the need for crazy wide expensive rims (to look its best) and the mutilation involved on the back Archie's............the thought never leaves my head tho lol

Phil's work was brilliant as always and i have added some photo's of the engine build both prior to and after the install.

Once finished i made my second mistake of this project and took the Z down to THO* :censored:
They were supposed to fit the AEM and set everything up as i was running a 740cc chip just to get the engine running from Phil. They proceeded to charge an arm and a leg for "unexpected" difficulties and when i went to collect the car i managed to drive it about 100 yards before it kept stalling. I eventaully got the Z limped back up North as i just wanted to get it away from them.

It was at this point that the RPS Clutch started giving me difficulties and it was really difficult to change gears. I took the Z over to The Garage in Motherwell where the guys stripped out the clutch and discovered that it did not look like it could possibly work due to a design flaw. I was gutted but managed to contact Gregg Dupree who was brilliant and discussed the issue with The Garage and offered for me to send the clutch to him as he was right next to RPS! I got a new clutch sent over for free and bear in mind this is a £1500 clutch! The issue had been that it was an early version of this clutch and RPS acknowledged that there was an issue with it.

I had decided on a Carbon Fibre theme for the Z. The engine had Carbon Fibre bits and pieces and the rear 99 spec spoiler was a carbon fibre item also.

I had to decide on what to do with the interior and how to tie the interior and the exterior together. The cream Leather interior had been removed and i set about looking for some seats. A set of Cobra Missano recliners with a carbon fibre back was sourced and custom built seat brackets were made up for them to fit.

I decided that i would use a company called Transcal in Livingston for the interior. I decided upon a Black Alston with matching Nappa Leather and Blue stitching for all the panels and Dashboard.

I had also got a lot of pieces of interior covered in Carbon Fibre and there is now no plastic left in the inside!

At the same time i got the bar that runs between the targas, Momo steering wheel and gearknob covered also.

To sort out the engine management side of things i decided to seek the help of the genius that is John Dixon! He came up while on holiday in Scotland and fitted an Emerald system into the Z and removed all the AEM wiring. Once fitted i took it down to Dave at Emerald in Norfolk and he set about tuning it. The Emerald has 3 separate programmable settings and a mass of other features that i will be looking into in the future.

Unfortunately on the day we discovered that the fuel pump was past its best and couldn't cope but the results were pretty good anyway. The fuel pump has now been replaced with an aeromotive 340lph unit.

Once the Ashspec 2.5" Intercooler and Intake piping and V3 intercoolers are fitted i will take it back down to see the difference that these will make.

Latest update is that the Z is currently at Soundwerks in Glasgow who have been fitting some stereo bits and pieces which i will update once i find out exactly what they are called! (Not any good at that stuff!) The guys there do a great job and they have already fully soundproofed and buit a custom Sub enclosure. Some more of the pieces for the Install are being carbon fibred and then they will be putting the interior back in and i intend to drive it over the summer!

I have a list of parts that i have been acquiring and will be fitting them at the end of summer.

Ashspec 2.5" Intercooler piping
Ashspec 2.5" Intake Piping
Ashspec V3 Massive Intercoolers
SpecialtyZ Sump
Meister R Coilovers
Carbon Fibre Plenum
Carbon Fibre Cam Covers
Replacing Z1 Shortshift with standard item

Other parts i am looking to get,

JWT VTC springs
New Custom built wheels
